As summer begins to fade in Thunder Bay, there’s one flower that takes center stage and steals the show—dahlias. With their lush layers, bold colors, and timeless elegance, it’s no wonder dahlias are our most-loved flower at our Saturday bloom bars. Why Dahlias?

Dahlias are unlike any other bloom. This year, our focus is on ball dahlias because they typically have the longest base life of any dahlias – about 5 days.

There’s a reason you don’t see these blooms in grocery stores. They don’t ship well and they don’t last as long as some of the other cut flowers we all love.

We harvest our dahlias early when the stems are fully hydrated. We only harvest prime blooms (buds won’t open further after being cut). We condition the blooms for the longest vase life possible.

If you’re changing the water regularly, expect your fresh dahlias to last 4-7 days. We have a collection of ball dahlias to offer the longest vase life.

Your bouquet could feature a mix to pinky pastels, or a combination of our most dramatic fall colour palette ranging from bright whites to deep burgundy, with some oranges and reddish hues throughout that echo the changing leaves.

We begin with tubers purchased in nearby Manitoba, plants already acclimatized to our growing zones. The tubers are started indoors in March, and were transitioned to our raised beds with low tunnels for cold protection in mid-May to promote the best root growth.

Those crazy early spring nights hauling buckets of hot water out to the beds at 3am to maintain above-zero temps meant we had blooms in late July/early August. These premium blooms are worth all the work for their fleeting beauty.

Our Dahlia Bouquet Subscription is designed to give you a taste of the very best of Thunder Bay’s fall season. For four consecutive weeks beginning Labour Day weekend, you’ll receive a freshly cut, handcrafted bouquet featuring dahlias in their peak form—directly from our gardens.

Each bouquet is thoughtfully arranged with complementary greenery and accent blooms, creating a unique design every week. No two bouquets will be the same, which means you’ll get to experience the full spectrum of our dahlias’ incredible variety and color.
